Will always remember our summers together at your pool. And those amazing spring breaks down to Florida.
These past few days, my thoughts have kept drifting back to the summer of 2008. That was the year a group of us traveled to Yellowstone National Park for a work-and-travel program—a journey that was as challenging as it was extraordinary. It was there that we met Wally.
Back then, the most stressful part of our day was simply figuring out how to get to work. Without a car, we had to stand by the roadside every morning, trying to hitchhike. It was nerve-wracking, and the timing was always so uncertain. That was until we were lucky enough to meet Wally.
Wally was the kind of person who radiated warmth from the very first moment you met him. Upon learning about our struggle, he didn’t hesitate to offer his help. He told us that since he was already driving his wife back and forth every day, he would be more than happy to give us a ride. That simple, generous promise solved our biggest daily hurdle and turned those mornings into the most heartwarming part of our time there.
He was more than just a driver to us; he was our guardian in a foreign land. His pure kindness and generosity touched the lives of many young travelers like us. Because of Wally, those three months in Yellowstone became more than just a job—they became a cherished memory filled with laughter, connection, and kindness.
Learning of his passing has left me with a deep sense of sorrow and regret, but even more so, a sense of profound gratitude. Through his actions, Wally taught us that even a stranger, by extending a helping hand, can have a truly transformative impact on someone else's life.
Wally, thank you for being so gentle and kind to us while we were far from home. Your generosity has become an indelible part of who we are, and we will hold your memory close in our hearts forever.
May you rest in peace. Your warmth will remain with us always.
