Robert Joseph Gunderman's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Gunderman passed away peacefully at Kobacker House on October 26, 2023 at the age of 96. He was born in Cleveland Ohio on May 17, 1927, the son of the late Bernard and Louise Gunderman. Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II as a radar technician. He earned a B.S. and M.S from John Carroll University in physics. He worked as an electrical and aerospace engineer and over his career worked for Bendix corporation, Rockwell International, Jeffrey Mining machinery, and ultimately retired from NASA Lewis Research Center where he was the project manager for the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite which launched in 1993. Bob is survived by his loving wife Mary of over 71 years, children Dr. Robert E. (Suzanne) Gunderman of Eugene, Oregon, Kathleen Gunderman of Columbus, Ohio, James R. (Anne Marie) Gunderman of El Segundo, California, and Dr. David J. (Lori) Gunderman of Hillsboro, Ohio. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Louise Gunderman, son William Gunderman, siblings Charles, Dorothy, Paul, Lawrence, and Anne. He was a life member of the Catholic War Veterans where he served as vice commander. He was a devoted Catholic and a charter member of St. Peter Catholic church and later St. Brendan the Navigator church. He was a licensed amateur radio operator and member of the American Radio Relay League for over 70 years. His passions included family, model railroading, and ham radio. He had a skill for fixing anything that broke whether it was electrical or mechanical. At one point there were 6 family cars, all at least 10 years old, for which he was the sole mechanic. Bob was the ultimate gentleman and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Brendan the Navigator Church on November 22nd at 10:30 am followed by inurnment at Resurrection cemetery at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Kobacker House.
