Wow! Max. I'm going to miss you. I used to drive him to grocery store & bank. Always a Gentleman. I've been call his cell phone since December. I am sorry for your loss. He was my friend. I had the utmost respect for Max. He said he would teach my grandson how to play piano. I took him everywhere wanted to go.
Mr. Maxwell was one of my favorites! I will never forget him. My condolences to his family.
He built quite the band program at little Fayette while I was in High School! He knew how to push us, challenge us and how to have fun with us! One of a kind, love you Huey!!!
Max was my band teacher from 6th grade and into high school at Fayette. He was so talented, and so passionate, and I remain amazed at his ability to pick up any instrument in the room and play it.....and play it well. I fondly remember him wandering the halls after school, playing his sax and dropping in on other teachers to chat. He had a fantastic sense of humor, and a deeper belief in his students than we had in ourselves. I will always remember him directing - hair flopping, sweat running down the side of his face - grinning because we got it right.
Sorry to hear this. He was my music teacher all through school. He taught me to play the recorder (in grade school) and then the flute. I always enjoyed him!
Sorry to hear of Max’s passing. My condolences to his daughters and family. He was highly influential in my life as a band member at Fayette. He encouraged me to attend VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, which I did. At my first job he wrote a composition for my band dedicating it to Brother Francis, our principal. A few years later, he was my assistant for a little while in Texas. I will always cherish our long conversations and friendship over the years.
I am so sorry to hear about Richard's passing. I have fond memories of working with and learning from him, whether it was working on a few measures in the third movement from Paul Creston's Sonata or learning algebra. Max made a huge impact on both mine and my family's lives. He will be missed. He will not be forgotten.
Max was a gifted musician and teacher who never stopped teaching. He was always helping others become a better musician (I especially appreciated that) while playing the music that he loved. He always made people think and had little patience for those who didn't. I still use one of his quotes when I see someone acting foolishly or making ridiculous comments. That quote is “and they let them vote”. I looked forward to our Thursday night rehearsals as they were times of fun music, thought provoking discussions, and as I use to tell the group, “I'm here for the camaraderie”. Max was proud of his daughters and would talk about adventures in Antarctica as well as jobs in the Columbus area. Abner's Sweet Street (as Chuck Yackee use to say, the band's acronym would be ASS band) played for weddings, funerals, bar venues, at Wildwood Preserve, in gazebos, on street corners, in Masonic lodges, and any other venue where Max could show his showman talents and enjoy good music. Max is the third member of the original six man group that has passed away. He will be missed.
I’m so sorry to hear of Richard’s passing. I have so many fond memories of living across the street from him and his family. My children grew up with Laura and Catherine. For years, Max (Richard) gave both of my children private music lessons (saxophone, clarinet, and flute lessons.) He was an extremely talented musician and teacher. He even helped my son with math. My children and I always looked forward to Max coming for lessons, supper, conversation and laughs. He was so influential both musically and through his bond of friendship in the lives of my children. I have Max to thank for my children’s successful musical achievements and am so appreciative for the encouragement, dedication, time, and talent he devoted to them. He was always there to support my children; at solo and ensemble time, going with us to buy instruments, encouraging them to perform solos, inviting them to play with his band, and playing in recitals. We will miss you! You were a true friend to my family. Laura, Catherine and Family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
