Prem Verma's Obituary
Ms. Prem Verma, beloved sister, aunt, educator, librarian, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, in Hilliard, Ohio. She was born on May 5, 1937, in Agra, India.
Prem was raised by parents who placed great importance on education, instilling in her a lifelong love of learning and independence. She earned her undergraduate degree from Agra University and began her teaching career in New Delhi in 1973. Later that year, she traveled to the United States, where she settled and pursued advanced studies.
In the United States, Prem earned a master’s degree in education summa cum laude from the State University of New York, followed by a second master’s degree in Library Science, graduating with academic distinction. After completing her studies in 1978, she taught at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, before accepting a position at Glenville State College in 1981, a place she would come to describe as warm, welcoming, and deeply meaningful. In 1982, she proudly became a United States citizen, a milestone she regarded as a privilege and a meaningful affirmation of her independence and values.
At Glenville State College, Prem built a distinguished career spanning more than two decades. She served as Head of Technical Services for the Robert F. Kidd Library, taught library science, and played a key role in developing the College’s online catalog. In recognition of her lasting contributions to teaching, scholarship, and service, she was named Professor Emerita on May 10, 2003. After retiring, Prem lived in East Brunswick, New Jersey, to be closer to her sister. In 2022, she relocated to Columbus, Ohio, settling in a senior living community near family.
Her kindness and warmth extended far beyond her professional achievements. Prem loved reading—especially novels by Danielle Steel, enjoyed Indian and Italian food, and was a lifelong traveler who explored new cultures across North America, Europe, and Asia. She loved meeting new people and making friends and was often complimented on her gentle nature, whether she was mentoring students at Glenville State or forming lasting connections at her senior communities in East Brunswick and Columbus. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and cared for.
Prem was one of six children born to Sardar Singh and Sonia Devi Singh. She was preceded in death by her siblings Vidya, Om, Narendra, and Shanker. She is survived by her sister, Rama (Dr. Jagpal) Rana, and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in the United States and India.
Per Prem’s wishes, a simple cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert F. Kidd Library at Glenville State University in Prem’s memory.
Prem Verma will be remembered for her love of learning, her generosity of spirit, and the warmth she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
