Norman Douglas Cherry's Obituary
Norman Douglas Cherry went home on February 26, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents Norman Doyle and Dorothy, special "father" Black Raven Segee, sister Karen, and brothers Ronald Eugene, Paul Allen Sr., David, K. Lynn, and infant Joseph. He is survived by his siblings Lee Cherry and Helen Sosebee, special "sister" Sunshine (Vincent) Petruzzi, his children Roberta (Ken) Gier, Robert (Mary) Cherry, Roy (Jennifer) Cherry, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Nicole, Alexis, Kayley, Sofia, and Emma, and special "grand-daughter" Jess Ronan, many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Norman joined the Marines when he was 17. They quickly recognized his brilliance and sent him to school to learn computer programming. Norman proudly served 4 years in the USMC. When he left the Marines, he joined the corporate world and traveled the country setting up computer systems. He eventually became disillusioned and left the corporate world saying that he would never again pay taxes to the country that had betrayed his trust.
Norman was soft-spoken with a playful nature and a ready joke. And yet he was fierce. He was fiercely independent. He was fiercely proud of his Marine Corp service. He was fierce in defending the weak or oppressed. He was fierce enough to travel the country with nothing but what he could carry on his back. He was a fierce spiritual warrior and was fierce enough to live true to his own ideals and principles rather than seeking comfort.
Military Honors Honors at Wesley Chapel Cemetery on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 11a.m. followed by gathering at Cedar Ridge Lodge at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park from 2 to 6pm.
