Mary Catharine Gunderman's Obituary
Mary (Hoying) Gunderman passed away peacefully at Kobacker House on December 30, 2024 just 18 days shy of her 97th birthday. She was born on January 16, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late A. Robert and Catherine (Driscoll) Hoying. She graduated from Lourdes Academy High School in Cleveland in 1946 and went on to attend Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. She subsequently went back to her alma mater to teach algebra and general science. She was married to Robert “Bob” Gunderman in 1952 with whom she shared 71 years of marriage and five children. She and Bob were devout Catholics and lived their faith daily with those around them. Mary’s faith led her to prioritize family in her married life. When the children left for college and work, Mary returned to the workforce where she worked as a supervisor at State Savings in Columbus, ultimately retiring from there. In retirement, she and Bob took several large trips including to the northeast United States, western United States ,Canada as well as Ireland. She also loved to spend time visiting with her family and grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic church in Columbus where she and Bob were charter members. Her passions included sewing and baking/cooking, and playing bridge with Bob. Her deep devotion to family found her designing and sewing matching outfits for her grandchildren. She is survived by her children Dr. Robert E. (Suzanne) Gunderman of Eugene, Oregon, Kathleen Gunderman of Columbus, Ohio, James R. (Anne Marie) Gunderman of El Segundo, California, and Dr.David J. (Lori) Gunderman of Hillsboro, Ohio. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents A. Robert and Catherine Hoying, husband Robert Gunderman, son William Gunderman, siblings Angela (Hoying) Schlegel of Indianapolis, Indiana and James Hoying of Vermillion, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Brendan the Navigator church on January 25, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. with inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Kobacker House.
