Martha Borchers' Obituary
Martha Borchers died peacefully at The Forum at Knightsbridge in Columbus on Sunday, May 22, 2024. She was born in Van Wert, Ohio as Martha Lou Morgan to Richard and Nelle Morgan. She spent her childhood in Van Wert along with her brother, the late Richard J. Morgan III. Her father was a successful local merchant and a prominent Mason in Ohio. Martha attended Denison University and was active in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics. After graduation, she worked for the State of Ohio, and subsequently at the Topper-Alloway law firm in Columbus. She married George M. Borchers, also a Van Wert native, who preceded her in death in 2010. Martha took up golf as a young woman, and she received her first set of clubs as a gift from Albert G. Spalding during her father’s tenure as president of the National Sporting Goods Association. Martha and George enjoyed golf throughout their married lives.
After marriage they lived for several years in Dayton, then moved to Sidney, Ohio where they raised three children: Mark, Sue and Emily. In 1969 the family moved to Columbus, and Martha earned a master’s degree in education from Ohio State. She worked in the Columbus school system, from which she retired. She had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, not including an eighth born 24 hours after her passing. Surviving children: Emily Swickard (Richard), Urbana, OH; Sue Kear (Jody), Columbus, OH; and Mark Borchers (Kathryn), The Woodlands, TX. A memorial service will be held for Martha at a date to be determined.
