Joseph Smith's Obituary
Joseph Smith, of Columbus, passed away on September 7, 2023. Joe was born May 3, 1932. He was the seventh child of Charles L. & Esther V. (Miller) Smith of Monocacy, Pennsylvania. He married Nina J. (Watts) Smith of Huntington, WVa. They had two sons Benjamin L. Smith (Gaye McNutt) of Seattle, WA, and Matthew D. Smith (Lisa Holland Smith) of Bellevue, WA, and two grandchildren Cara M. Smith and Ryan H. Smith. Joe had five older sisters, Esther M. Bell, Berta M. Breitenstein, Kathryn M. Patton, Elizabeth J. Smith, and Edith E. Smith, as well as one older brother, Douglas C. Smith, all of the Reading, PA area.
After graduating from North Coventry High School in Pottstown, PA, he was pleased to have served in the Army Security Agency from 1952 to 1955, mostly in Heilbronn, Germany, then to Marshall College and OSU. Joe attended Xavier U. while he worked at the Columbus Auto Parts from 1962 to 1990, and Metal Forge from 1990 to 1996 when he retired.
He enjoyed serving members and friends in several capacities as a longtime member of North Community Lutheran Church.
Joe especially loved his wife and family, enjoyed woodworking, loved baseball, music, politics, his country, and golf; with thanks to all those who tolerated his weird swing and those who never gave up on him.
Arrangements entrusted to Schoedinger Funeral Service. Memorial services to be planned for 2024. In lieu of flowers he would thank you for contributing to Judicial Watch or Hillsdale College.
