The Wagner family shared a cottage at Lakeside with the Bakers for many years. We came to feel like family. I remember Jan as a vivacious and loving person, deeply committed to the well being of the disinherited. She stayed in touch with my mom, Miriam until her death in June. I was sorry to not learn about Jan's death until now, and hope that that Vicky and Jodi and all the family know that our thoughts are with them in this sad time.
Janice Marie Baker became my mother-in-law relatively later in her marvelous life. I was immediately welcomed, literally with open arms. Thus, I became her unofficially adopted "second son". What I will most miss is her ever-present effervescence. I remember opera singer Beverly Sills having the nickname "bubbles". That moniker fit Jan Baker to a "T". She was intelligent and curious because she really wanted to know. She was also industrious and hard-working because she knew poverty. But that certainly was not a problem with her soul for that aspect of who she was, was always open, loving and supportive. Her best present to me was birthing Sandra Baker (her eldest) my amazing wife. I will sorely miss this shining LIGHT. May her spirit forever soar with the angels!
As a childhood friend of Jenny, her daughter, I often spent more time at Mrs. Baker's home, than I did at my own. She was always a kind and articulate person, eager to impart wisdom. I have so many fond memories! May God bless her family and friends and grant them comfort and peace at this difficult time.
Jan is a friend through Altrusa. Her spirit and spunk will be greatly missed. Jan was a true inspiration to our group and to me personally. She always had a kind thing to say and I was so impressed by all her travel stories. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. XO
