She lived the majority of her adulthood in Columbus. Jan graduated from Shelby High School in 1975. After earning a master’s degree from The Ohio State University, Jan taught for 23 years, primarily at McCord Middle School in Worthington, and spent her last seven years before retirement working as the Media Specialist at Kilbourne High School also in Worthington. After retiring from education, she split her time between her two homes in Loudonville, Ohio and Blue Grass, Virginia. In Blue Grass she volunteered her time at the Highland County Library and the Highland County Humane Society. She fell in love with the beauty of this area and was known to ride her motorcycle to and from the library.Jan was a member of the St. Matthew Episcopal Church. She loved reading, antiquing, and traveling. She traveled all over, but her most beloved destination was England. She hiked through Britain and loved visiting castles and churches throughout her travels. Jan was a caretaker at heart. She would do anything for anyone. She spent a large portion of her retirement taking care of family members who had become terminally ill. Jan held friendships very near and dear to her heart. Janet will be missed by her beloved dog, Hamish, who brought her great comfort when she needed it most. In addition to her father, Jan is survived by her brother Robert Ellis and wife Peggy of Ashland; her sister Jennifer Ellis of Mansfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She is preceded in death by her mother Mary in 2017; brother William in 2015; and sister Elizabeth in 2019. Jan and her family would like to thank the hospice staff of Brookdale. They were so calming and gentle in her time of need. Not only did they comfort Jan, but they also were a great comfort to the family. A special thanks to Jan’s McCord teaching friends who were able to be there for Jan during her last two weeks and also her wonderful friends in Virginia, especially the Cornelius and Meier families who she loved and loved her dearly. “What we have once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” - Helen Keller.Per Jan’s wishes funeral services will not be observed.
