George Edward Cucak's Obituary
George Edward Cucak, age 91, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at The Inn at Winchester Trail in Canal Winchester, OH. He was born in Mingo Junction, OH where he lived until 1947 when the family relocated to Connecticut. Mr. Cucak graduated from Harding High School in Bridgeport, CT and attended LSU and the University of Bridgeport. He was known throughout the community for playing basketball at school and for the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield, CT, as well as participating in Field events while in school. Mr. Cucak spent two years in the Army as a radio relay and carrier operator in Company A of the division’s 14th Signal Battalion, Fourth Armored division.
In 1960 Mr. Cucak married Judith Ann Garthwait; they had two children, Laura and Beth, who they raised primarily in Guilford, CT. George and Judy were proud to be the parents of two UConn graduates. They enjoyed being fans of both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Mr. Cucak was an avid golfer who limited his favorite pastime while his children were young. The family went on many memorable camping trips during that time. Later he enjoyed participating in the golf and bowling leagues through work. In 1997 he was the proud winner of the President’s Cup at Lyman Orchards Golf Club. After moving to Ohio, George became a regular patron at the Memorial Golf Tournament. Every year he and his daughters looked forward to spending a day together walking the course, watching the best golfers in the world. George’s other interests included fly fishing, woodworking, playing guitar, gardening and keeping an immaculate landscape at home. His vegetable gardens were wildly productive and treasured by those who were lucky enough to share in the bounty.
After retiring from Honeywell Corp./Avco Lycoming in Stratford, CT, George and Judy enjoyed their vacations in Rangeley, ME and Gulf Shores, AL. However, nothing made them happier than spending time with their family. In 1989 they became grandparents for the first time, a role that they cherished. In 2020 they became great-grandparents, the cherry on top of the sundae.
Mr. Cucak was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Judy; his sisters Emogene (Cucak) Wicko and Peggy Cucak; and his nephew James Stanley Wicko. Survivors include his daughters, Laura Cucak of Westerville, OH, and Beth (Cucak) Barnett and her husband Steve of Canal Winchester, OH; four grandchildren, Emilee Gustafson and her husband Jesse of Canal Winchester, OH, Kenneth Cole and his wife SJ Harden of West Virginia, Shannon Barnett of Groveport, OH, and Chloe Barnett of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Cooper Matthew Gustafson and Eleanor Judith Gustafson; a sister, Ann Cucak of Stratford, CT; a niece, Mary Ellen Evanich and her husband Mark of Milford, CT; a nephew, John Wicko and his wife Elizabeth of Milford, CT; two great-nephews, Ethan Wicko and Daniel Evanich.
