On November 25, 2022, Dean married Betty Jo Giles. They were married two years and were together twelve years.
Survivors include: his wife Betty, his children Carley (Jeffrey) O’Conner of Marysville, OH, and Jamie Jesanis of Boston; step-children David Giles, Tiffany Giles (Wyatt Rauch) and Bridget (Steve) Nelson of Marysville; sisters and brothers-in-law Barb and Dave Pilliland of Marysville, and Lora and Bill Eppich of Johnstown; and eight grandchildren (Lori and Laney Grimes; Waylon, Kendall, Vivian, and Mackenzie Rauch; Isabella and William Nelson).
Other survivors include his siblings, Mike Sherman (Betty Rider) of Youngstown, and Barbara (Mike) Mulford of Columbus, as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who loved his highly skilled easter egg hiding abilities and friendly disposition.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents George and Ruth Sherman of Dublin, and in-laws Lorna and John Owen of Marysville, and Grandfather C.B. Owens of Alabama with whom he was especially close.
Dean graduated from Dublin High School in 1981 where he played soccer for one year. Dean was employed at Murfield Golf Club, 84 Lumber, and Honda of America from 1982 until he retired in 2020. Over time Dean resided in Columbus and Marysville, and in Japan working there for Honda of America.
Dean attended Atonement Lutheran Church where he was confirmed by Pastor Bell, and was a member of Moose Lodge #1651, Eagle’s Lodge #3506, and the Honda Retirement Group.
Growing up, Dean was a member of 4-H and later developed a love for painting and detailing cars, playing cards (especially Euchre), coaching and watching softball, as well as playing horseshoes and cornhole. Dean rooted for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Philadelphia Eagles, and also enjoyed quilting at a very young age with his grandmother Frieda Thiergartner of Milford Center.
Dean was kind and his family looked forward to the New Year’s gathering where he was the expert at making potato dumplings, even showing his grandmother Frieda a technique or two to get the very best texture. Dean was known for baking many varieties of breads that would be brought to family gatherings, squeezing in a store-bought bread only once, as if it was of his own making.
The family thanks friends for their support in his times of need, especially the compassionate care he received at Riverside Hospital in his final days.
On August 17, 2024, there will be a Visitation from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm including a Remembrance Service at 12:45 pm at Underwood Funeral Home at 703 East Fifth Street, Marysville, OH, followed immediately by a gathering of family and friends at the Moose Lodge #1651, 1651 Milford Ave., Marysville, OH.
