Daniel Morris Dunaway's Obituary
Daniel Morris Dunaway, 87, of Westerville, passed away on January 25, 2024 at St. Ann’s Hospital. He was born October 17, 1936 as Richard Nelson in Newark, Ohio and grew up in the Licking County Children’s Home until he was adopted by Aaron and Lena Dunaway in 1938. His adoptive dad served in the US Marines during WW II and the family was stationed in San Diego for some time until they moved back to Newark.
Dan graduated from Granville High School and retired from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical in 1982 after 30 years. He worked in several other jobs including computer network sales and transferred his love of golf into a job at the PGA Golf store at the Columbus Airport where he enjoyed swapping stories with customers about their favorite courses.
Anyone who knew Dan knew how much he enjoyed golfing and boating. He cherished his times with his wife, Amelia (Midge) Dunaway, on their boat at Lake Erie and golfing in Hilton Head. He treasured his time with their grandsons, Parker, Liam and Mateo, and enjoyed attending Parker’s sporting and school events in the area. Dan will be remembered for his witty dry humor, his appreciation for sports cars especially Corvettes, and his soft spot for his dogs through the years including Oscar, Lacey and Zoe. For over 25 years, Midge and Dan had many fun evenings with their Dinner Club friends, playing competitive board and card games.
Dan is survived by his wife of 28 years, Midge; daughters, Debra Barthel (Rick), Nannette Burge and Diana Clemens (Kirt); stepchildren, Lucinda Kerschensteiner (David Miller), Holly Kerschensteiner-Logan (Jim) and Bradley Kerschensteiner (Astrid); grandchildren, Richard, Christopher, Sevin, Joeniqua, Anfernee, Parker, Liam and Mateo and great-grandchildren, Marissa, Carlie, Cameron, Jaden, Callaya, Carson, Tobias, and Tiana. He is preceded in death by his son, Danny Jr.
Per Dan’s wishes, care and cremation are entrusted to Buckeye Cremation by Schoedinger. There will be no calling hours. Family plans to honor his wishes by spreading his ashes on Hilton Head Island.
