Alwood "Al" W. Griffith's Obituary
Alwood “Al” Whittier Griffith, age 93, of Dublin, OH died peacefully at Friendship Village of Dublin on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. Al was born in Delaware, OH on June 17,1928, the eldest child of Bernard “BI” and Louise Griffith. A graduate of Upper Arlington High School, Al was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Signal Corp and earned a BS in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University. He was a devout Christian and married to Patricia Griffith (née Combs) for 62 years.
Al was a civil engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for 38 years, where he was part of the team establishing Ohio’s interstate highway system as part of implementing the Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Early in his life he was very active in the Boy Scouts, serving as a scout master. He led 5 scout groups to Philmont Scout Ranch, several canoe expeditions, and attended the 1953 National Jamboree, traveling by train from Ohio to California . He was honored for his Scout leadership with the Silver Beaver award. For 54 years he enjoyed working with Vaud-Villities, head of the stage crew on stage right. Al was a handyman and woodworker, building, among other things, two sailboats that he and his family enjoyed sailing on Hoover Reservoir.
Al is survived by his wife Patty, his sister Jean Preslan and brother David Griffith, his children Mary Lou, Paul, and Ted, their spouses George, Tauna, and Eileen, and his grandchildren Benjamin, Claire, and Megan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 10 at 2:00 at Friendship Village of Dublin in the Muirfield Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Please visit www.buckeyecremation.com/obituary to share a memory or send condolences to Al’s family.
