Making decisions about your loved one’s final resting place can be difficult. If they made no specific requests before they died, it is up to you to decide whether you want a traditional funeral service or cremation service. Many people are moving away from costly traditional funerals and choosing to cremate loved ones. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the projected cremation rate for 2021 is 57.7%. There are four main types of cremation to consider, including direct cremation in Worthington, OH.

Cremation With a Traditional Service

If you wish to have a traditional funeral service, you can choose to have a service followed by cremation. This option enables you to have the traditional parts of a funeral service, including visitation and a full service. The body will be embalmed for viewing, and a casket will need to be purchased or rented for the funeral. However, after the traditional services, the body will be cremated instead of buried. As with a traditional funeral, everything will have to be done within a few days of death.

Cremation With a Memorial Service

Having a memorial service is much like having a traditional service except the body will not be present. There will be no visitation or viewing of the body, and embalming will not be necessary. There will also be no need for a casket. The body will generally be cremated right after death, but a memorial can be planned days or weeks later. With a memorial service, loved ones have the option of including the ashes in ceremonies and spreading the ashes.

Direct Cremation

With a direct cremation, there is no service or memorial held at the funeral home or crematorium. The body will be cremated shortly after death and no casket or embalming is necessary. The family will receive the ashes and can easily have their own memorial service when they are ready to do so. The family will also be able to take the ashes and spread them in a spot that is personal to the family or the deceased. Direct cremation gives the family the most control and lowest cost of all cremation options.

Cremation With Body Donation to Science

If you or your loved one wants their whole body donated to science, the remains will be cremated and sent back to the family. This process usually takes 3-5 weeks after death. Acceptance will depend on several factors, including the manner of death and if the scientific institution is accepting donations at the time of death. With the donation, the cremation is usually done at no cost to the family.

Cremation is a popular option for many families. Whether you decide to have services associated with the cremation is a personal decision that each family should make.
