Catherine B. Kay Duggan Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Catherine Velma “Kay” Duggan passed away in Columbus, OH, May 2, 2018 after a short illness. Catherine “Kay” was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on August 6, 1924 to Francis and Madeline (Doyle) Bubbles, their second daughter. Shortly after Kays birth the family moved to the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Highland Park where she attended Catholic school. In 1937 the family moved to a farm in Lum, MI, where Kay graduated from Imlay City High School in1942. Kay joined the US Navy in 1944 and attained the rank of Pharmacists Mate 3rd Class, serving at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA. It was also at Oak Knoll where Kay met her future husband, Wayne S. Duggan, who was serving as a Corpsman at the facility. Wayne and Kay married on February 2, 1946, and after mustering out of the Navy both attended mortuary college in San Francisco. They moved to Lapeer, Michigan in 1947, where their first daughter Maureen was born. Kay’s husband Wayne was recalled for service in the Korean War in 1950. A year after his return, son Kevin was born, then a few years later daughter Brigit. Kay’s self-described role during these years was ‘housewife.’ She and Wayne also raised and showed German Shepherd dogs as a hobby. As her children grew older, Kay worked outside the home at several jobs, most notably in the Loan Department of Lapeer County Bank and Trust until 1975. Kay and Wayne moved to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, in 1976. They thoroughly enjoyed their lives in the Virgin Islands with Kay doing bookkeeping for her husband’s business, Boetzberg Plumbing, as well as working in the office of Virgin Land Development. After Hurricane Hugo decimated St. Croix in 1989, the Duggans moved to Holiday, FL, in spring of 1990. They enjoyed their full retirement in Florida until March of 2001 when Wayne passed away after a long illness. Kay sold their Florida home and moved to Columbus, OH, to live with her youngest daughter Brigit. Kay loved to travel, going to the Tuscany region of Italy, on a Windjammer cruise in the Caribbean, on multiple car trips around the United States, and on twice yearly sojourns to New York City. Catherine (Kay) Duggan is survived by her children Maureen, Kevin, and Brigit; granddaughters Andrea North and Cherish North; great grandsons Logan Bailey and Diego Rios; and nieces, grandnieces, nephews, and grandnephews.
